Support our School

One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade (Chinese Proverb)

Celebrating our past by supporting our future

It is hard to believe that it is two years since we launched The 1874 Foundation Appeal, following a great deal of thought and consideration. Our hope was that it would give members of our alumnae community who wish to, an opportunity to offer regular financial support for the aims of the school.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this form of fundraising, it simply means that donors set an amount that they are happy to give and a frequency at which they wish to donate. This may be a small amount on a monthly basis or a larger amount annually. The important thing is that the donor has control over what they give and a say in how the money is spent.

Since October 2013, we have received so many offers of support from friends and alumnae of all eras, some financial and others offering their time and expertise for the benefit of the school. It has been a humbling experience; we have learned how much Croydon High School means to so many people and it has inspired us more than anything to ensure that this sense of pride and community is retained by the current generation.

Building our Bursary provision - providing more opportunities for bright girls

Our first project relates to a growing need for bursary funding at the school. We have become increasingly aware that every year we turn down applications from extremely bright girls, who we feel sure would do well here, because of their families’ financial circumstances.

We know that a good number of our alumnae have benefited from some form of financial support and will often refer to this - and the difference they feel it made to their lives - when they communicate with the school. Our bursary fund is steadily growing thanks to the generosity of our friends and alumnae, but as we have said before, it takes a significant capital investment to be able to fund even one seven year bursary.

This is why we have decided to focus fundraising efforts on bursary provision.  We hear so many positive stories from alumnae who benefited from financial support during their time at school and so feel it is an appropriate challenge to set ourselves that we continue the legacy of providing outstanding education for girls who could otherwise not access it.

Building our Sports Pavilion – for use by the school and local community

We also launched a two year fundraising programme to enable us to build a sports pavilion next to our artificial hockey pitch.   We are delighted to report that, after a lengthy period of negotiation dealing with the legalities associated with any substantial building project, things are now under way. We believe it will be a real asset for the school and the local community who will have access to it and are extremely grateful to all who chose to support us.

Of course, everyone who decides to give, either to The 1874 Bursary Appeal or as an unrestricted gift, or who remembers the school in their Will, can be sure that that their generosity will be greatly valued and that all funds raised will be used to benefit the girls of Croydon High School.. Thank you for taking the time to read about our plans – please don’t hesitate to contact me via the Ivy Link or directly if I can tell you anymore.

The school fully appreciates that not everyone will be willing or able to offer this form of support, particularly when the economic climate remains difficult.  We do hope, however, that you will read the Annual Fund information which lays out our ideas on both projects in more detail.

If you do not wish to be involved, we hope that you will still be sympathetic to our aims and intentions. The support and goodwill of the Ivy Link alumnae community is an integral part of life at Croydon High and is a relationship of which the school is very proud.
We would like to be able to keep you updated with news from the school from time to time. If we do not have your email contact details and you are happy for us to do this, please let us know by emailing us with your name (and maiden name if applicable) to

A Living Legacy

Legacies are vitally important to the long term future of Croydon High School. Every gift in every Will, no matter what the size, helps keep us at the forefront of education in the Croydon area and provides more opportunities for more girls to experience the many extraordinary benefits of an education in our school.

For many, the ability to make donations in their lifetime is limited. Leaving a gift in a Will can provide a more suitable opportunity to make a significant contribution. At the wishes of the donor, legacies can benefit Croydon High School specifically. They will be used to support bursaries, provide new school facilities or other additional educational opportunities for our girls.

The Girls’ Day School Trust is a registered charity (no 306983) and by leaving a gift in your Will to any GDST School, you can also reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. All legacies to the GDST are free from capital gains tax and inheritance tax.

If you are considering naming Croydon High School in your Will or would like to inform us that you have already done so, please download the pledge form below. You may prefer to contact us by phone or email to discuss your gift. If so we suggest you contact Fiona Williams, the Head's PA ( By informing us of your pledge, you will of course help us plan for the future, but please be assured that this does not commit you to a particular course of action.
